How Discord timestamps work

A Discord timestamp is a short code, <t:1767225600:F>, that Discord turns into a date and time in each reader's own timezone and language. Someone in London and someone in Tokyo read the same message and both see the right local time, with no "is that EST or UTC?" replies. The number is a Unix timestamp: seconds since 1 January 1970 UTC. The letter after it picks the format.

All 7 formats

CodeStyleExample (en-GB)Good for
:tShort time16:20Today's events, shift times
:TLong time16:20:30Exact moments, logs
:dShort date01/01/2027Deadlines in tables
:DLong date1 January 2027Announcements
:fShort date and time1 January 2027 16:20Events (the default when you leave the letter out)
:FLong date and timeFriday, 1 January 2027 16:20Big launches, tournaments
:RRelativein 3 daysCountdowns that update by themselves

Combine two for the clearest event post: <t:1767284400:F> (<t:1767284400:R>) shows the full date and a live countdown side by side.

How to use it

  1. Pick the date and time above. It uses your timezone, so enter the time as it is where you are.
  2. Click the format you want to copy its code.
  3. Paste it into a message, an embed description, a channel topic or a scheduled event description.

Timestamps work in messages, embed descriptions and fields, and bot replies. They do not render in embed titles, author names, footers, nicknames or channel names; there they show as the raw code.

Common mistakes

  • Milliseconds instead of seconds. JavaScript's Date.now() gives milliseconds; a 13-digit number lands thousands of years in the future. Divide by 1000.
  • Converting the time yourself. Do not shift the time to UTC by hand before generating the code. Enter your local time; the code already stores the exact moment.
  • Daylight saving. If your event is after a clock change, pick the date first so the generator uses the right offset for that day.
  • Relative times in old messages. :R keeps updating, so "in 2 hours" becomes "3 days ago". Use :F for anything people will scroll back to.

Timestamps in bots and webhooks

Bots build the same code from a date: `<t:${Math.floor(date.getTime() / 1000)}:R>` in JavaScript, or f"<t:{int(dt.timestamp())}:R>" in Python. Noxyr uses them for giveaway end times and poll deadlines, so every member sees the right local time. Try them in a message with the webhook sender or build a full announcement with the embed builder. Planning across timezones? The timezone event planner shows one time in several cities at once.

FAQ

Do Discord timestamps work on mobile?

Yes. The Android, iOS, desktop and web apps all render them in the reader's local time.

Can members see the original timezone?

No. Discord only shows the converted time. Tapping or hovering a timestamp shows the full date, still in the reader's own timezone.

What is the default format?

<t:1767225600> with no letter is the same as :f, short date and time.

How do I make a countdown?

Use :R. It counts down live ("in 5 minutes") and switches to "5 minutes ago" once the moment has passed.
