# Anti-spam in depth

Message rate, duplicate and mention limits, timeouts and message deletion.

## Three triggers

Anti-spam tracks each member's recent messages in memory and acts when any of three limits is passed inside the window: total messages, identical messages, or mentions in one message.

- **max_messages**: Default 6 messages inside window_seconds (default 8).
- **duplicate_limit**: Default 4 identical messages inside the window.
- **mention_limit**: Default 6 user or role mentions in a single message.

## What happens

The member is timed out for timeout_minutes (default 10) and, if delete_messages is on (default), the offending messages are removed. The log channel gets an entry with the trigger. Timed-out members cannot send messages, react or join voice until the timeout ends.

## Exemptions

Members with Administrator or one of the configured admin roles are not acted on, and bot messages are not inspected. There is no separate trust list for anti-spam; if a channel should be exempt, deny the bot View Channel there.

## Tuning

A hype channel during a drop will trip 6 messages in 8 seconds for normal people. Raise max_messages or lengthen the timeout rather than turning the feature off. Off by default, like anti-nuke: enable with /security antispam enabled:true or on the Security page.
